Adam was published by Knight Publications, whose flagship title, Sir Knight (later just Knight), was a staple of girlie magazines in the mid 1950’s. What differentiated Adam from Sir Knight was its approach. Conceived as a competitor to Playboy, Adam was heavier on the articles than on the pictures of women. Like Hugh Hefner, Knight Publications tried to make Adam a bit classier than most such magazines on the stands. Adam, also like Playboy, concentrated on not just the magazine, but also on the merchandise including such things as calendars, spicy party records, and a “Bedside Companion” that consisted of the better articles from the magazine with a pictorial or two thrown in for good measure.

Although Adam is gone today, Knight Publications lives on with Adam Film World, a magazine which concentrates on adult movie reviews.
